I grew up in Rothesay, and attended Rothesay Academy Primary and Secondary Schools. There, I studied Higher Art, taught by Lyn Bulloch and Ian M Scott. When I was 18, I left the island to study languages and history of art at the University of Aberdeen, but always returned to Bute during the holidays. After a career in education, first as a languages teacher and then as a teacher trainer, living and working in Oxford, I returned to Bute when I took early retirement. At this point, I moved out of Rothesay to live at Kingarth, where I love being surrounded by nature and the countryside. My family history is linked to several of Bute’s farming “dynasties” - I can trace my connections to the island’s rural community back to the 18th century. One of my ancestors in the 19th century was a stonemason who built many of Bute’s farmhouses and other structures across the island, including the old bridge at Drumachloy, Ettrick Bay. I am delighted that I now live within sight of where my grandfather was born. I know Bute very well, and have always loved spending time exploring the island, taking a keen interest in both its history and the natural environment. I enjoy photography, and use my own shots to help me to create my artwork. As well as painting in acrylics, I have created the Rockpool Collection, a range of coasters, tea light holders and other products using sand, seaweed and shells from local beaches set in craft resin.
