Fairy Doors at Kames

Fairy Doors at Kames image

For our young and young at heart guests
Kames Castle dates back over 700 years.  Once a protected stronghold and the site of great battles, for many  centuries now all has been calm and peaceful. Perhaps it is little wonder then that magical fairies have made Kames their home and today the grounds at Kames are scattered with tiny fairy doors. We can’t tell you exactly where these doors are…they disappear and reappear with the seasons just as the fairies who live in them. Neither can we tell you how many there are. But as step out of your holiday cottage and wander the grounds with your family, look out for them as you go..on the trees and branches, behind gates and of course in the magical walled garden.  Whether it’s the excitement of finding a new door or imagining who lives behind each one, or whether it's simply a reason to spend some quality time outdoors, this is a delightful activity for the young and the young at heart.

Or why not have the children write a story about the fairies that live in the grounds?  Here is a little information to get them started…

The fairies are all named after wild flowers and each has it’s own unique personality. Fairy Poppy is a lively spirit, much like the vibrant poppy flowers that burst in to life in the summer. This fairy is full of energy and loves to dance in the long grass, hopping from one meadow flower to the next. Unlike Poppy, Fairy Bluebell is a serene and gentle prescence, fluttering around the forest floor in the woodland of Kames. With her wings the colour of deep indigo and with a bell like ring in her voice, this fairy is often found in the bluebells when spring is in the air.  For such a tiny creature Fairy Thistle is remarkably strong, just like thistles that grow across Scotland’s windswept hills. With wings of silver this fairy stands guard over the untamed parts of the estate protecting the beauty of the land and the secrets of the fairies.  When you see the path in the walled garden, it won’t be difficult to discover where Fairy Lavender lives in Kames.   This fairy  is known as the healer with an aura of soothing and serenity.  An encounter with this fairy will give an immediate sense of peace as your cares are taken away on the breeze. But what of the other flower fairies ? Who are they and what adventures have they had together?..
