INSPIRING BUTE: A WRITER’S VIEW
Myra Duffy is best known for her contemporary cosy crime series set on the Isle of Bute, but she has also written a children’s book set in Bute, two novels set in Glasgow and even a romantic suspense novel set in a riding stables. To date there are thirteen novels and four novellas in the Isle of Bute series featuring her main character, Alison Cameron, “an ordinary woman who finds herself involved in extraordinary events” according to one reviewer. The first in a new series set in Victorian Bute is also now available, and the next in the series is due for publication in 2026
Myra says, "Renowned for its spectacular scenery as well as its long history as the home of the Stuarts, the hereditary High Stewards to the King of Scots, Bute is a perfect setting for my mystery series. The small community, with its gossip and intrigue, provides lots of scope for plot development.
"One of the things I most enjoy about writing is meeting readers. I take part in Bute Noir, the annual crime writers’ festival on the island, in late July/early August each year. I run a bus tour where I talk about the various places in my books and the inspiration behind thes tories. Although we can’t touch on every location, I highlight the most popular includingEttrick Bay, Kames Castle, the Rothesay Pavilion and the High Kirk. This is always apopular event but luckily for the passengers I don’t drive the bus!"
Myra divides her time between Glasgow and Bute where she has long-standing family connections. She also runs workshops on writing a novel and is a member of the Society of Authors and of the Crime Writers’ Association.
