10 things to do with kids at Kames Castle Cottages on the Isle of Bute
10 things to do with kids at Kames Castle Cottages, Isle of Bute
• Anyone for tennis? Kames has the only tennis court on the Isle of Bute. We supply a range of raquets and tennis balls so that you can find your inner Murray or Djokovic...
• Unlike in Alice in wonderland, the summer croquet at Kames Castle Cottages do not have flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as croquet balls! But it’s still lots of fun. Why not set up a game in the wonderful walled garden?
• “All it takes is faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust”. Have a wander along our little woodland walk looking out for magical fairy doors along the way. How many will you see?
• The game of Kings. New in 2024 is the giant chess board in the walled garden. There’s also a giant chair for those who prefer to watch the battle.
• It is the west of Scotland…so every now and then there is a rainy day. But never fear, our cottages have a range of board games to keep the family entertained.
• Look out for furry friends. At Kames we are always delighted to welcome visiting wildlife. Look out for the roe deer in the grounds, or the hedgehogs in the specially built log pile. Did you see a red squirrel? Let us know so we can tell the Bute Red Squirrel Project! There are also many different species of birds too. Listen out for their songs or see how many you can spot.
• 700 years of history. If walls could talk, what stories would the castle walls tell? Take a look at the impressive stone walls and battlemented parapet. Imagine who has lived there and read about the dragons, Tine & Deatach, who guard the castle. Write a story and send it in to us. We will share our favourites on our website.
• Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce is a story about a magical walled garden. Kames has it’s very own Victorian walled garden complete with 18th century glasshouse. Enjoy the peace and quiet that the garden offers, pick some fruit and veggies when they are in season, or why not have a picnic with the family.
• Hug a tree! Kames is home to many mature trees, some reaching 200 years old. We have boards scattered around the grounds with info about the different species. Try guessing their ages.
• Run rabbit, run rabbit, run run run. We are fortunate to have lots of space and open lawns. Have a picnic, kick a ball or just enjoy burning off some energy!
